A Good Cover Letter Can Make the Difference!

Every hiring manager wants to receive a good cover letter that will lead him or her to the job candidate who will fill the job opening. What do good cover letters include? Clear, positive, and informative writing that states specific details about the job hunter’s experience, education, and qualifications for the job opening. It is friendly in tone, yet professional, not wasting words on personal trivia, such as your golf score, but focusing on events and duties that show your ability to become an asset to the company. Also, an employer expects to be asked for an interview, so be sure to make that request and provide your contact information in a good cover letter.

Rollin’ on the River, Railways & Roads

The "Spirit of Peoria" paddlewheel steamboat transports us back to the slow, smooth beauty of river travel. The Illinois River was originally used as a main branch of transportation and travel to and from the Peoria area. Steamboats, such as the "Spirit of Peoria" transported people and goods up and down the river to destinations from the Mississippi River and the rest of the continental United States.

As the country moved forward during the railroad boom, so didPeoria, and in November of 1854, the railroad made its way into town. Due to its central location, Peoria was the fourth largest regional hub in the U.S. railway system for many years. During its peak, Peoria served 15 railroads and 70,000 miles of track. In 1891, the Rock Island Depot was built to service this large railroad hub, and it was an integral part of the Peoria railroad until it closed in 1978. Today the depot is a thriving restaurant complex, with exceptional dining, spirits and live music.

Mention the name "Duryea" and many will say, "Oh yes, the automobile that was invented and built in Peoria". But the re-edited book, Charles E. Duryea-Automaker, by George W. May, proves that although the Duryea was the first practical American gasoline powered car, Springfield, Massachusetts was its original home. However, we can take a measure of comfort from the fact thatPeoria was one of several cities in which Duryea automobiles were built. The vehicle produced in the late 1890s, in Peoria, "Peoria Motor Trap", usually in a three-wheel configuration. The oldest known, fully restored, Peoria built Duryea, is exhibited at the Peoria Public Library.

Macular Degeneration Treatment Options

Due to the tremendous lifestyle changes that are entailed by the vision loss created by macular degeneration, there is significant interest in treatment options for the condition. It is important, however, to present a realistic view of the treatments available. For many, if not most, conditions, treatment is equated with a cure, control, or genuine improvement of a condition. When dealing with macular degeneration these expectations are inappropriate. With one exception, treatments for this condition are aimed at either slowing the loss of vision or preserving existing vision. There is no cure for macular degeneration, nor is there any reliable method for restoration of vision that has already been lost. macular degeneration treatment Having established the limitations, an overview of the treatments follows below.

pepper spray Effective Deterrant

A pepper-spray projectile, also called a pepper-spray ball or pepper-spray pellet, is a projectile weapon made up of a powdered chemical that irritates eyes and nose (see best pepper spray). These non-lethal weapons launch a fragile ball which breaks upon impact and releases an extremely effective super irritant, a powder called PAVA (capsaicin II) pepper. The launchers are often slightly modified .68 caliber paintball guns. Most of these guns are Tippmann pro-carbines or similar and are set to fire in the 350fps range. The systems are generally contact safe and target accurate within 60 feet and has an effective range that provides area saturation with PAVA within a 200 foot range.

Pepper-spray weapons systems are used by law enforcement, military and other organizations, and individuals. The weapon is used generally in the role of stand-off weapons, where physical proximity to a suspect is deemed dangerous but deadly force is not warranted. The systems are not limited to classic standoff situations and allow agents to apply as many rounds as required to bring individual suspects, multiple suspects, or crowds into compliance.

Exercise and Nutrition

With any exercise or nutrition program, youll probably lose some fat initially, but far too often the progress doesnt continue or doesnt come as lose weight fast fast as the person would like because they’re using a temporary mindset. They’re only focused on the short term and one specific goal. So they end up switching to something else, and the cycle continues until theyve become consumed by this cycle of confusion. I believe that this is one of the biggest, if not the #1 reason for the lack of fat loss and fitness progress that is being experienced by the masses of exercisers and dieters in the world. They are jumping from one fad diet or free online diets exercise routine to another, while losing sight of whats really important, and what really works. Simply put, they are exercising far too much, not nearly intensely enough, and trying to adhere to unrealistic diet recommendations.

One reason so many people love working from home is they can make money on the Internet doing what they love most. Many home business opportunity are started on niche ideas that were spawned by a special skill or a favorite hobby of a mom, dad or single person. Of course, the key is to find a niche market you can target easily without much stiff competition. Even in markets that have a lot of competition, a niche business can work well if you use certain marketing techniques such as keyword article marketing, press releases, link exchanges, contextual advertising, pay-per-click, etc.

So what makes a niche Starscapes business opportunity so wonderful? Its simplicity! Owning a niche business means focusing on one particular type of product or service instead of many. Some will recommend that you diversify your business if you want to make money on the Internet. To diversify, however, means to concentrate on several different business opportunities, hoping that at least one of them will succeed. The problem you may run into is having too many tasks at hand and not enough time to handle them all. Instead of succeeding at one of your businesses, you might end up not succeeding at all.

With a niche business, you can keep your focus in one area of interest. This means you can put all your energy into promotions, customer service, and website design for this one venture. You can even add other products or services along the way that are related to your business. For instance, if you own a gift website, then adding items such as holiday greeting cards, creative wrapping paper and accessories, and maybe even special delivery services would make sense. These are all related to your core niche business and won’t necessarily cause you to abandon your “first love!”

How to Discover Your Niche Business Opportunity

Probably the most difficult task when it comes to making money online is finding that niche business that’s just right for you. You might think, “Hey… I don’t have any special skills or interests.” If that were true, you’d probably live in a plain white-walled room with no television or phone! Do you have a favorite sport or hobby? What about baseball, football, golf, soccer, bowling, hunting or fishing? Do you love to sew quilts or make homemade gift baskets? Are you into computers, electronic games, or family board games? Do you enjoy cooking, cleaning or simply raising your children? Do you love to sing or play a musical instrument?

If you read through the list above, I’m sure something will come to mind that you enjoy doing at work or in your spare time. You might be surprised to learn that all the fun “activities” mentioned above have become a lucrative source of home based business income for thousands of people just like you! There are stay-home moms who make a living selling e-books with tips about child rearing, cooking, sewing or cleaning. There are men who sell e-books about their favorite sport or hobby along with related products. You can easily find e-books about fishing, hunting, and every sport imaginable – all with a price of $19.95 or greater.

Look online to see how many home based business websites you can find related to playing games and strategies for PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox or Nintendo systems. Have you noticed the parade of websites related to selling musical instruments or offering singing tips? Not to mention the many affiliate opportunities available today in which you promote the products of various companies to receive a commission.

All these offer an extraordinary opportunity to make money on the Internet – right from your own home computer. With a little Internet marketing know-how and lots of enthusiasm, you too can start to make money online while following your passions.

Advertising, Promotion and Distribution

The difference between advertising and promotion is that advertising is easier and more effective once you identify your customers and determine market potential. This will help you to determine when, where, what and how to advertise. Advertising lets prospective customers (target market) know about your product and makes them want to buy from you. Effective advertising gets the right message to the right audience at the right time plus is measurable so you can determine if it is increasing sales. It creates a business image in the customer’s mind, increases customer information, about the home business and attracts customers.
Choose forms of advertising and the distribution method by their appropriateness to your business. Remember to use a mix of advertising methods. Experts say to not spend your entire advertising budget on one type of media. Take advantage of every opportunity to promote your business. Promotion can be done through news stories of your grand opening or local radio news programs.
Computer marketing. The newest form of advertising and marketing is on-line. It is estimated that over $1 trillion worth of commerce will be done over the Internet by the year 2002, and that most of the products sold will be by entrepreneurs. Advertising can be done for little cost on local bulletin boards and community pages, to sizable monthly fees for sophisticated marketing services. To sell on-line you will need to establish an attractive web page with quality pictures and exact descriptions of your products. You will also need to be ready to accept credit card orders. An advantage to marketing this way will be your access to a much larger market.
Word of mouth. Word-of-mouth advertising can be a powerful medium for a home based business opportunity in the local area. It is sincere, believable and unsolicited. It is also uncontrollable, so you will want to make sure that it is positive advertising. It is largely up to you to make sure that your product and the experience your customers tell others about is the kind of advertising you want. Be professional and prompt, meet deadlines, keep appointments, and do not accept more work than you can deliver. These good business practices and friendly hospitality will enhance your business and make people want to come back. It takes time to build a reputation.
Brochures/Hand-Out Flyers. A brochure or flyer can be small, inexpensive and attractive and is an excellent method to advertise your business. Get advice from a printer or hire a graphic designer to help with the layout of pictures, text and lettering. Do not invest money in these items if you did not consider how either will be used or who it will be used for and it is constructed in such a way that it will be opened, read and responded to. They have many uses but are wasted if not well planned.
Direct mail. Mailing brochures or letters to businesses or people likely to become customers may be helpful when you first open your business. Mailing again at regular intervals throughout the year also may help but you must keep an up-to-date mailing list. Direct mail is most effectively used on clients within a 50 mile radius of your business if it is only used to advertise and not for orders. If orders are taken, distance is no object. It adds a personal touch as a direct communication between you and your customer. Mailing can be expensive and should be weighed with the other options.
Bulletin boards. Post professional looking brochures, flyers or business cards on public bulletin boards in restaurants, grocery stores, laundromats, apartment complexes, schools or anywhere visible to your target market. It is common courtesy to ask permission to post. Some locations specify where posters can be used or may not permit their use.
Newspapers. Contact the local editors and tell them about your new service or product. An editor may want to do a feature story, especially about your grand opening. Getting an article may be easier if you can tie into the activities of a charitable organization, a benevolent group or a community activity. Include a black and white picture and send along a news release. An article like this is promotion and not advertising, but may be very effective.
Newspaper advertising should be done on a consistent basis. People need to see your ad several times before it will stick in their minds. Ask to have your ad placed in the same place each week and preferably on a page that is highly read. Placement does make a significant difference in whether or not an ad is noticed. Color and size also make a difference but do cost more.
Classified ads are usually inexpensive and appropriate for a small business. Run ads in local newspapers and shoppers’ guides in your community.
Shows and displays. Depending on your type of business, it may be appropriate to display some of your work in a public library or bank along with your business cards for people to take. You can also use road signs.
Other businesses. You may want to advertise in a business that is complementary to yours. For example, a fabric store for alterations or gourmet food store for cooking classes. This type of advertising benefits both businesses.
Yellow pages. Check with the phone company for the time of printing for the next book. Be sure to get your business name in the white pages and consider a yellow page ad. A listing in the yellow pages can be helpful but may have a charge, so check with your local phone company. Always consider your customer. Would a potential customer consult the yellow pages looking for your type of product or service?
Local radio and TV. Many radio stations have local talk shows. Call the directors and see if they are interested in discussing your new business. Radio ads give you the flexibility to choose the audience that will hear your advertisement. This can be done by choosing the station and time of day the ad is broadcast. The radio sales agent can help you to design your ad to meet your goals.
Television ads can be effective but are very expensive to produce and run. Local cable companies may provide low cost space on their cable access page. Distribution can also be accomplished via television. Shows like QVC and other home shopping shows are popular and effective, but you must have a significant supply on hand that can be shipped immediately. Infomercials are also gaining in popularity but are very expensive to produce and air.
Specialties. You may want to offer matchbooks, pens, calendars, decals, balloons or other tokens of appreciation for doing business. Many of these items have long-term use and make good seasonal gifts. You could print stickers or labels to attach to every product. However, labels may be expensive. Weigh the cost and the advantages of the items depending on your particular business.
Telemarketing. Telemarketing is a sales approach that is done entirely by the phone. It may be selling to customers who call or calling potential customers.
Selling on Consignment. You may choose to sell on consignment, where the retail store displays your products, advertises and sells them for you. For this service, they charge a flat fee of 30 to 50 percent of the selling price. The store generally pays its consignors once a month for merchandise sold. A consignment store should reflect a neat and friendly yet businesslike appearance. Other merchandise in the store should be similar in quality to yours. The store owner should be able to suggest realistic selling prices for your products.
Since you own the products until they are sold, the store is not responsible for theft or damage. Another disadvantage is that your money is tied up in the merchandise until it is sold. It’s in your inventory, not the store’s. If an item does not sell, it may be returned to you in less than salable condition or be out of date. Inspect written agreements carefully. Make sure to include all of the details you find necessary to protect your investment, including length of shelf time.
Chamber of Commerce. Joining the local chamber of commerce and other professional organizations is a good opportunity to make valuable contacts and participate in community activities. It also helps makes your business visible.
Additional ideas and information can be obtained from the following:
Read magazines, trade journals and observe competitor ads in newspapers.
Talk with public relations people and others who promote products and services to find out the best ways to advertise your business.
Attend trade shows. The wholesalers and distributors have excellent ideas on what they would do if they were in your shoes. If you are wholesaling, visit with your suppliers. Gain contacts to meet with others who are in a business similar to yours. If you are not in their market or potential market, many will be glad to share their expertise.
Consult people in the franchise business or in unrelated franchises if you are considering this form of business. Determine how they reach their clientele and learn their repeat sales techniques and the preferences of those customers.
Depending on the suitability of your business, don’t overlook parades, mall shows, gallery shows, street fairs, summer festivals and county fairs.
Plan your advertising based on a set budget. This can be determined by spending:
The same amount as last year.
What the competition does.
A percentage of your sales.
To meet your objectives (example: increase sales by 10 percent).
Regular, steady, targeted advertising attracts more customers than splashy, appeal-to-no-one advertisements. Zero in on your specific target audience with cost-effective advertising. Plan an appropriate advertising theme using the name of your business and featuring a logo (if you have one). People tend to remember and trade where there are catchy (not overly cute) names, slogans and logos.

Perceptions of power mobility use and safety within residential facilities

BACKGROUND: power wheelchairs and medical scooters enhance quality of life by enabling occupation, improving self-esteem and facilitating social interaction. Despite these benefits, the risks associated with power mobility use raise serious concerns in residential facilities. PURPOSE: As there is no gold standard to assess when a client is unsafe, a two-phase study was conducted to develop client-centred guidelines for power mobility use. METHOD: In the first phase of the study, presented here, 18 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders, including power mobility users, other residents, staff and family members. RESULTS: A thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four main themes: 1) the meaning of power mobility, 2) learning the rules of the road, 3) red flags: concerns about safety, and 4) solutions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Given the importance of power mobility, safety measures need to address issues of mobility and safety for power mobility drivers and those around them.

Power output and metabolic cost of synchronous and asynchronous submaximal and peak level hand cycling on a motor driven treadmill in able-bodied male subjects.

PURPOSE: To evaluate external power output and physiological responses of synchronous (SYNC) and asynchronous hand cycling (ASYNC) at submaximal and peak levels of exercise. METHODS: n=9 able-bodied male subjects (age: 20.1+/-2.1 years) performed two (sub)maximal continuous hand cycle exercise tests, using the SYNC and ASYNC mode in a standardized commercial add-on hand cycle unit (counter-balanced order). Treadmill speed (1.89 and 2.17 m s(-1)) and slope (steps of +1%) were changed in a fixed sequence of 3-min exercise steps. www.easymedonline.com Gears were adjusted to 65 rpm. External power output (PO) was continuously monitored with a strain-gauge instrumented chain ring ((SRM) Schoberer Rad Messtechnik). A conventional power wheelchairs drag test was performed to validate mean external power for each speed-slope combination. Heart rate (HR; bpm) and oxygen uptake (VO2; ml kg(-1) min(-1), SMTP) were continuously monitored. Paired T-tests and ANOVA for repeated measures evaluated effects of mode and exercise level (p<0.05). RESULTS: Subjects reached peak levels of performance (RER: 1.05+/-0.07 versus 1.10+/-0.1 for SYNC and ASYNC). Peak PO and Formula: see text were significantly higher for SYNC (81.6+/-11.8 W versus 68.5+/-10.6 W; 26.4+/-4.5 ml kg(-1) min(-1) versus 21.2+/-3.0 ml kg(-1) min(-1)). At submaximal exercise levels, gross mechanical efficiency (ME) was significantly higher for SYNC (12.1+/-0.9% versus 9.7+/-1.4% at 41 W). No significant differences were found for PO (at equal velocity and slope), as derived from the SRM (SYNC and ASYNC), and from the drag test. DISCUSSION: The absence of any differences in PO between SYNC and ASYNC, and with respect to the drag test, rules out 'additional external work due to maintain the desired heading' in the ASYNC as an explanation for the lower performance in this mode. Lower peak performance and ME in ASYNC may be explained by the increased stabilizing muscle effort in the upper extremities and trunk in order to combine power production with stable steering. ASYNC is less efficient compared to SYNC. Similarly, peak performance capacity was higher for SYNC. CONCLUSION: External work does not differ between SYNC and ASYNC hand cycling.
