The "Spirit of Peoria" paddlewheel steamboat transports us back to the slow, smooth beauty of river travel. The Illinois River was originally used as a main branch of transportation and travel to and from the Peoria area. As the country moved forward during the railroad boom, so didPeoria, and in November of 1854, the railroad made its way into town. Due to its central location, Peoria was the fourth largest regional hub in the U.S. railway system for many years. During its peak, Peoria served 15 railroads and 70,000 miles of track. In 1891, the Rock Island Depot was built to service this large railroad hub, and it was an integral part of the Peoria railroad until it closed in 1978. Today the depot is a thriving restaurant complex, with exceptional dining, spirits and live music.
Mention the name "Duryea" and many will say, "Oh yes, the automobile that was invented and built in Peoria". But the re-edited book, Charles E. Duryea-Automaker, by George W. May, proves that although the Duryea was the first practical American gasoline powered car, Springfield, Massachusetts was its original home. However, we can take a measure of comfort from the fact thatPeoria was one of several cities in which Duryea automobiles were built. The vehicle produced in the late 1890s, in Peoria, "Peoria Motor Trap", usually in a three-wheel configuration. Yellow pages. Check with the phone company for the time of printing for the next book. Be sure to get your business name in the white pages and consider a yellow page ad. A listing in the yellow pages can be helpful but may have a charge, so check with your local phone company. Always consider your customer. Would a potential customer consult the yellow pages looking for your type of product or service?
Local radio and TV. Many radio stations have local talk shows. Call the directors and see if they are interested in discussing your new business. Radio ads give you the flexibility to choose the audience that will hear your advertisement. This can be done by choosing the station and time of day the ad is broadcast. The radio sales agent can help you to design your ad to meet your goals.
Television ads can be effective but are very expensive to produce and run. Local cable companies may provide low cost space on their cable access page. Distribution can also be accomplished via television. Shows like QVC and other home shopping shows are popular and effective, but you must have a significant supply on hand that can be shipped immediately. Infomercials are also gaining in popularity but are very expensive to produce and air.

Many of these items have long-term use and make good seasonal gifts. You could print stickers or labels to attach to every product. However, labels may be expensive. Weigh the cost and the advantages of the items depending on your particular business.
Telemarketing. Telemarketing is a sales approach that is done entirely by the phone. It may be selling to customers who call or calling potential customers.
Selling on Consignment. You may choose to sell on consignment, where the retail store displays your products, advertises and sells them for you. For this service, they charge a flat fee of 30 to 50 percent of the selling price. The store generally pays its consignors once a month for merchandise sold. A consignment store should reflect a neat and friendly yet businesslike appearance. Other merchandise in the store should be similar in quality to yours. The store owner should be able to suggest realistic selling prices for your products.
Since you own the products until they are sold, the store is not responsible for theft or damage. Another disadvantage is that your money is tied up in the merchandise until it is sold. It’s in your inventory, not the store’s. If an item does not sell, it may be returned to you in less than salable condition or be out of date. Inspect written agreements carefully. Make sure to include all of the details you find necessary to protect your investment, including length of shelf time.
Chamber of Commerce. Joining the local chamber of commerce and other professional organizations is a good opportunity to make valuable contacts and participate in community activities. It also helps makes your business visible.

Perceptions of power mobility use and safety within residential facilities
BACKGROUND: power wheelchairs and medical scooters enhance quality of life by enabling occupation, improving self-esteem and facilitating social interaction. Despite these benefits, the risks associated with power mobility use raise serious concerns in residential facilities. PURPOSE: As there is no gold standard to assess when a client is unsafe, a two-phase study was conducted to develop client-centred guidelines for power mobility use. METHOD: In the first phase of the study, presented here, 18 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders, including power mobility users, other residents, staff and family members. RESULTS: A thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four main themes: 1) the meaning of power mobility, 2) learning the rules of the road, 3) red flags: concerns about safety, and 4) solutions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Given the importance of power mobility, safety measures need to address issues of mobility and safety for power mobility drivers and those around them.

This interim final rule conforms our regulations to section 302(a)(2)(E)(iv) of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (Pub. L. 108-173). This rule defines the term power mobility devices (PMDs) as medicare power wheelchairs and power operated vehicles (POVs or medical scooters). It sets forth revised conditions for Medicare payment of PMDs and defines who may prescribe PMDs. This rule also requires a face-to-face examination of the beneficiary by the physician or treating practitioner and a PMD prescription and pertinent parts of the medical record that the durable medical equipment supplier maintains in records and makes available to CMS or its agents upon request. Finally, this rule discusses CMS’ policy on documentation that may be requested by CMS or its agents to support a Medicare claim for payment, as well as the elimination for the Certificate of Medical Necessity for PMDs.

Power output and metabolic cost of synchronous and asynchronous submaximal and peak level hand cycling on a motor driven treadmill in able-bodied male subjects.
PURPOSE: To evaluate external power output and physiological responses of synchronous (SYNC) and asynchronous hand cycling (ASYNC) at submaximal and peak levels of exercise. METHODS: n=9 able-bodied male subjects (age: 20.1+/-2.1 years) performed two (sub)maximal continuous hand cycle exercise tests, using the SYNC and ASYNC mode in a standardized commercial add-on hand cycle unit (counter-balanced order). Treadmill speed (1.89 and 2.17 m s(-1)) and slope (steps of +1%) were changed in a fixed sequence of 3-min exercise steps. www.easymedonline.com Gears were adjusted to 65 rpm. External power output (PO) was continuously monitored with a strain-gauge instrumented chain ring ((SRM) Schoberer Rad Messtechnik). A conventional power wheelchairs drag test was performed to validate mean external power for each speed-slope combination. Heart rate (HR; bpm) and oxygen uptake (VO2; ml kg(-1) min(-1), SMTP) were continuously monitored. Paired T-tests and ANOVA for repeated measures evaluated effects of mode and exercise level (p<0.05). RESULTS: Subjects reached peak levels of performance (RER: 1.05+/-0.07 versus 1.10+/-0.1 for SYNC and ASYNC). Peak PO and Formula: see text were significantly higher for SYNC (81.6+/-11.8 W versus 68.5+/-10.6 W; 26.4+/-4.5 ml kg(-1) min(-1) versus 21.2+/-3.0 ml kg(-1) min(-1)). At submaximal exercise levels, gross mechanical efficiency (ME) was significantly higher for SYNC (12.1+/-0.9% versus 9.7+/-1.4% at 41 W). No significant differences were found for PO (at equal velocity and slope), as derived from the SRM (SYNC and ASYNC), and from the drag test. DISCUSSION: The absence of any differences in PO between SYNC and ASYNC, and with respect to the drag test, rules out 'additional external work due to maintain the desired heading' in the ASYNC as an explanation for the lower performance in this mode. Lower peak performance and ME in ASYNC may be explained by the increased stabilizing muscle effort in the upper extremities and trunk in order to combine power production with stable steering. ASYNC is less efficient compared to SYNC. Similarly, peak performance capacity was higher for SYNC. CONCLUSION: External work does not differ between SYNC and ASYNC hand cycling. SRM readings appear valid for PO monitoring in hand cycling within the studied range of PO. SYNC is more efficient than ASYNC and leads to higher peak performance
